CLOUD CAVE
Burnet Gallery, Minneapolis, 2011
In the 2011 exhibit Cloud Cave, sculptures and photographs suggestive of 15th and 16th-century explorers, maps, cave formations, and other objects from nature inhabit Burnet Gallery, Minneapolis. The limited palette shared by all the work manifests light and its absence. Taking a cue from the theatrical effects of black and white films, such as Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bête (1946) with it’s fantasy landscapes and Frank Lloyd’s Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) with its combination of seafaring and island paradise, Cloud Cave offers passage to a utopian geography made up of island-like objects that situate themselves comfortably within the expanse of the gallery.
