Naturaleza muerta con una liebre AND VIBRANT MATTER

DREAMSONG GALLERY, ARMORY ART FAIR, 2023

Rooted in a childhood event, when Horochowski’s mother skinned, cooked, and served a hare for a campsite dinner after it was inadvertently hit and killed by the family’s car, the work also alludes to the use of the Patagonia region as a detention site where dissidents were “disappeared” during Argentina’s dirty war.
Still Life translates to “Naturaleza Muerta” or dead nature in Spanish. Material objects tend to be neither still nor dead when observed closely. In "Vibrant Matter" a slumping heavy lead sheet performs the part of a starched linen cloth, suspended as if defying gravity. This illusion requires assistance from a stronger metal, aluminum. Lemons are sometimes used in educational settings to illustrate how a battery works. The citric acid of the lemon reacts with the zinc and loosens electrons. Copper pulls electrons more strongly than zinc, so loose electrons will move toward the copper when the electrodes are connected by wires. Moving electrons are called an electric current, which is what lights up the bulb. Matter manifestes agency.
